Introducing Aylsham Heritage Centre

Nestled in the corner of the Church yard is a small but perfectly formed Heritage Centre which is open to visitor and locals to provide a window into the past and bring the heritage of the town to everyone.

Aylsham has so much fascinating history, and we are so lucky that so much of that history has been preserved for us to explore and enjoy.  The Heritage Centre and the town archive work closely together to continue to preserve and add to our collection of memorabilia, photographs and information about the town.

The Heritage Centre itself is open between the beginning of March and the end of November every year and every year there is a new exhibition looking at one aspect of the history of the town.

This year we are exploring the history at the heart of the town – the Market Place.

There has been a market in Aylsham for many years - the earliest written reference to the market at Aylsham is in 1296. The Market Place must have been a busy - and probably smelly- place, full of traders, horse and carts, butchers and fishmongers and lined with public house. There was also a set of stocks too to help to keep the peace!

The exhibition looks at the general history of the Market Place and the events it has hosted, as well as the history of the buildings that surround the square. Many of these buildings would be completely recognisable to the inhabitants from a couple of hundred years ago. Many of the stories from the occupants of these building show that life really hasn’t changed much at all over the years – discussions about market place layout, parking issues, competition between businesses, providing quality and service to customers are all evident across the years – I guess not much changes at all!
