In towns and villages across the United Kingdom, signs welcoming visitors often carry the words “twinned with…” followed by the name of a European town. These partnerships are far more than ceremonial titles. They represent decades of friendship, cultural exchange and community connection that continue to bring people together across borders.

Like many historic market towns, Aylsham proudly maintains its own French twinning relationship with the town of La Chaussée-Saint-Victor in the Loir-et-Cher region of central France. The twinning was formally celebrated in 2000 with ceremonies held both in Aylsham and in France, marking the beginning of a lasting friendship between the two communities.

Town twinning became especially popular after the Second World War, when communities across Europe sought ways to rebuild trust, understanding and friendship following years of conflict. Rather than relationships existing only between governments, twinning encouraged ordinary people - families, schools, clubs and community groups - to meet one another, exchange ideas and discover shared traditions and values.

Over the decades, twinning associations throughout the UK have organised exchange visits, cultural events, school trips and community celebrations, helping generations of residents experience life in another country while building genuine personal connections.

For Aylsham, a town with a strong sense of heritage and community spirit, the partnership reflects many of the qualities that make the town special today. Our historic market town has always looked outward while valuing local identity and La Chaussée-Saint-Victor shares many similarities with Aylsham: a proud local identity, a strong community spirit and a rich cultural heritage. Through twinning, residents have enjoyed opportunities to experience French traditions, hospitality, food and language first-hand, while welcoming French visitors to discover everything that makes Aylsham unique.

These international friendships are perhaps more valuable today than ever before. In a fast-moving digital world, town twinning offers something refreshingly personal - real human connection, shared experiences and the chance to celebrate both our differences and the things we have in common.

Visitors exploring Aylsham may not immediately realise that this Norfolk market town has close ties to a community hundreds of miles away in France, but the relationship remains an important part of the town’s modern story. It is another example of how Aylsham combines local pride with a warm and outward-looking character.

As Aylsham continues to welcome visitors from across the UK and beyond, the town’s twinning relationship serves as a reminder that friendship, culture and community can easily cross borders - and that even small towns can build meaningful international connections.
