The Aylsham Heritage Snail Trail may now be leading visitors around 22 fascinating locations across the town, but the idea behind it began more than a decade ago. Here, Jayne Andrew from Aylsham Heritage Centre tells the story of the idea she carried with her for 12 years – and how it finally became a reality.

"I have been running the Heritage Centre in Aylsham for around 15 years now and it’s a job I love and am passionate about. Most people involved with the Centre now tend to hide when I say the words, ‘I’ve had an idea!’ They are words I have said on many occasions! Most of my ideas I can turn into reality – an event, an exhibition, a workshop or a family activity. Many of them are a little crazy and most of them involve a lot of extra work, but new ideas fill me with enthusiasm and provide an outlet for my creativity.

But I have had one idea bouncing around in my head for at least 12 of the years I have had the pleasure of doing this job. I wanted to create something permanent, something that would tell the story of Aylsham’s wonderfully rich history and something that would appeal to all ages.

I wanted to create the Aylsham Snail Trail.

A Trail Inspired by Aylsham’s History

My idea was to use the snail logo – which is associated with Aylsham through Cittaslow and the Slow Food movement – to create a self-guided tour of the town.

The idea developed into a trail of heritage locations around Aylsham, each marked by its own carved snail plaque, leading people to discover the stories behind the buildings and places they might otherwise walk straight past. At the heart of the trail is our rather more conspicuous resident – the large Aylsham snail outside the Town Hall.

Each location would have information about the building or place it was associated with, available both online and through a paper guide. I wanted to create something people could follow at their own pace, uncovering different parts of Aylsham’s history as they explored the town.

That idea sat in my head for 12 years, but it was simply too big for me to do alone. We didn’t have the capacity, the finances or the time to make it happen in a meaningful and high-quality way.

Finding the Right Opportunity

Which all brings us to 2025, when I was asked to join the Visit Aylsham group in my capacity as the general Heritage person. I was pleased to be asked to join and keen to help with anything that would encourage people to visit and learn more about the history of the buildings and the town in general.

Imagine my surprise when an item entitled ‘Love Your Market Town finance bids’ appeared on the agenda.

We had been invited to submit applications for a pot of money for projects that would encourage people to visit and shop in their local towns more frequently. The scheme was supported by Norfolk County Council and the district councils.

This seemed to be the perfect opportunity, so I took the plunge and uttered the words, ‘I’ve had an idea!’

Luckily for me, the group thought it was a great idea. The bid was put forward and we were successful, which meant that the capacity and finances were finally in place for the idea to become a reality.

From Dream to Reality

By working with the most amazing team of people, the Aylsham Snail Trail finally began to take shape.

It evolved from my original vision – as these things usually do! Some things disappeared and others were added, but after 12 years of imagining what it might become, it was quite something to see it actually being made.

There were the carved heritage plaques taking shape, artwork being created and, of course, our much larger snail being transformed into something unmistakably Aylsham.

And then, on 1 August 2026, the Aylsham Heritage Snail Trail officially opened.

After 12 years, the idea that had been bouncing around in my head was finally out there for people to enjoy. Now It’s Your Turn to Follow the Trail

Today, the Aylsham Heritage Snail Trail takes you to 22 locations around the town, revealing stories from Aylsham’s past as you go. I hope it encourages people to look a little more closely at buildings and places they may have passed many times before, and gives visitors a new way to discover Aylsham and its history.

And, of course, having finally brought a 12-year idea to life, there is just one question left…

What’s the next idea?"
